September Blog 2026 When God Comes Looking for Us
Genesis 3v9
“But the LORD God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’
In Breakthrough we have recently finished a series on the opening Chapters of Genesis. This is one of the greatest phrases in it. There is something remarkable about those words. Adam and Eve had disobeyed God. They had eaten the fruit they had been told not to eat, and now they were hiding among the trees of the garden. They were ashamed. They were afraid. They were trying to hide from God. But then God came looking for them!
“Where are you?” It’s a searching , multi level question! Of course, God knew where Adam was. He wasn’t asking because He had lost track of him. God was calling Adam out of hiding.
And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about Genesis 3. When humanity runs from God, God comes looking for humanity. We see that pattern throughout the Bible. God calls Abraham. He meets Moses at the burning bush. He repeatedly calls His people back to Himself. Ultimately, we see it in the person of The Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 19v10
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” The Bible doesn’t simply tell the story of people searching for God. It tells the story of God searching for people. That matters because we can easily imagine that Christianity is about finding our way towards God. We need to become better people, sort ourselves out and somehow make ourselves acceptable to Him.
But the gospel tells a different story. It’s not get right and come to Jesus - it’s come to Jesus and He will put you right! God doesn’t wait for Adam and Eve to come out of hiding. He comes to them, and He still does. Perhaps you’ve never thought of yourself as someone who is hiding from God. But hiding can take many forms. Sometimes we hide behind busyness, success or self-confidence. Sometimes we simply avoid thinking about God because we don’t know what we would say if He asked: “Where are you?” It is a searching question and it was the beginning of a conversation. More importantly God would cover their shame and nakedness with the blood sacrifice.
If we receive Christ in faith we also are covered and cleansed with His blood. Jesus later told the story of a shepherd who goes looking for one lost sheep. When he finds it, he rejoices. Friends, that is the heart of God.
Do you find yourself far from God today? Have you drifted from faith, or you’ve never really believed. God knows, sees and cares. The most important question is how will you respond when He asks : “Where are you?” The God who came looking for Adam in the garden came into our world in the person of Jesus Christ and He still calls us out of hiding today.
