Mark 6 v31: “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.”
July is a month when many people look forward to a holiday. Schools are on a break, families travel and routines change. After months of work, responsibilities and business, a holiday can provide a much-needed opportunity to rest and recharge. Even The Lord Jesus Himself recognised the importance of rest. After a particularly busy period of ministry, He invited His disciples to come away from the crowds and spend time resting.
Rest is not laziness; it is part of God’s design for our wellbeing. If you choose the right holiday, it can bring physical benefits such as reduced stress, improved sleep, renewed energy, and time to enjoy family, friends and God’s creation.
Yet while physical rest is important, our souls also need refreshment. It is possible to return from a holiday physically refreshed but spiritually weary. Remember, it’s not a holiday from God but an opportunity to spend time with Him.
The summer months provide an opportunity not only to rest our bodies but also to draw closer to the Lord. A change of routine can create space for prayer, Bible reading, reflection, and thanksgiving. Find a good local church, go along and encourage them and it will do you good as well. Whether we are travelling or simply enjoying a quieter pace at home, we can take time to appreciate God’s goodness around us. Whether it’s the beauty of the countryside or the majesty of the sea. Christian fellowship and the blessings will benefit us spiritually.
As we enjoy the holiday season, let us remember that true and lasting rest is found in Christ. He invites all who are weary and burdened to come to Him. Physical holidays come to an end, but the peace and rest that He gives can sustain us every day. May this summer be a time of renewal for both body and soul as we heed His invitation: “Come ye apart and rest a while.”
